Transforming One Student Into Two Teachers: A Comparative Study of Immersion Teacher Education Programs and Their Impact on Teachers’ Awareness of Content and Language Instruction
This SSHRC-funded project addresses the growing demand for French immersion programs in Canada, where enrolment rates have surged significantly in recent years. Despite the program’s popularity, many graduates report feeling unprepared for Francophone environments due to common deficiencies in language proficiency and teaching practices.
This study focuses on enhancing immersion teacher education (ITE) by investigating the knowledge and experiences of immersion teacher educators at Canadian universities. Through surveys and focus groups, the project aims to identify essential elements for effective ITE and develop a framework that supports both current and future programs. By collaborating with educators across Canada and the U.S., the project seeks to improve the integration of content and language instruction, ultimately benefiting pre- and in-service teachers and their students.
