Advancing Agency in Language Education (AALE)

Funded by SSHRC, the AALE project builds on the LINguistic and Cultural DIversity REinvented (LINCDIRE) project, which identified a gap in pedagogical innovation among language teachers who often relied on traditional, grammar-driven approaches. AALE focuses on enhancing teacher agency by examining how teacher beliefs, knowledge, and context shape the adoption of plurilingual, action-oriented, technology-mediated pedagogies. The project collaborates with teachers to develop a professional development toolkit aimed at sustaining pedagogical innovation across diverse language teaching contexts. It is being conducted across three Canadian provinces, four linguistically diverse areas, and four languages: English as a Second Language (ESL), French as a Second Language (FSL), German as a Foreign Language (GFL), and Spanish as a Foreign Language (SFL).
